Now Loading... Abes Odyssey: Oddworld

Hey Josh here giving you another Now Loading... with this one we will be looking at that lovable hard working revolutionary. Abe.

This strange looking alien was a part of a lot of our childhoods and was one of the first 3D side scrollers on the PlayStation. The story follows a worker on "Rapture Farms" a food processing company that uses slaves of Abe's race to work in their factories and dedicate their lives to the corporation. One late night Abe stumbles upon a board meeting and hears the company is losing sales so they need a new product called New n Tasty which was made with a new secret ingredient. After listening in some more Abe finds out the ingredient in question is his race, so Abe finds himself on the run attempting to escape the factory and save as many of his people along the way.

As you can see the intro graphics have stood the test of time well and don't look outdated as much as other PlayStation games. The game was a 3D side scroller that used some interesting abilities that hadn't been used much in other games. First off Abe had the ability to gather other employees and order them about by simply saying "wait here" or "follow me" this allowed players to check out areas ahead before running in with 3 followers and losing one because you couldn't turn around fast enough. Another fun mechanic to the game was the ability to control the guards. This ability gave the player the ability to go the gun toting psycho and take out other guards or just run into a giant saw and take him out that way.

Another neat point to Abe's Odyssey was the amount of cool immature things you could do that gave the game a lot more playability. While you tried to solve a puzzle you could pass the time by passing gas ( literally Abe would fart ) and the best part was if you had followers they would all laugh at your impressive ability to fart on Que. Another little neat thing i liked was if Abe runs into a wall rather than just hit it and have no reaction Abe would fall on his ass and grunt as if he was annoyed with himself ( Or the player )

All in all Abe provided players with an old style of playing and Incorporated some new techniques to make it more interesting and appealing to a wider audience. The game was fun and had a lot of serious undertones that where not too obvious and didn't beat us over the head like a lot of children's games and films do now.

So there you go. Go check out Abe's Odyssey: Oddworld if you haven't already. its a fun game with a lot to offer and really deserves a HD remake for modern platforms. I know i would buy it again.
